Just up the road from Carmel-by-the-sea is a little old ranch called Search Ranch, which used to be a stagecoach stop in the 1830's for rich folks coming from San Francisco on their way to Tassajara Hot Springs. These days, the ranch is a cool farm inhabited by some lovely, eccentrics whom I have grown to love. The hills in Carmel Valley are dotted with live oak, california poppies and grazing cattle. Search Ranch is a sweet little place, 40 acres of land with a bubbling creek running through it, a lovely garden which we ate from each night, and a wood burning hot tub hiding in the willows beneath the starry night. 24 miles away is Carmel beach, Point Lobos, and then Big Sur a little further south. I am convinced that this is the most beautiful place on earth.

You've been to a party in paradise! What people dislike (rightly so) is Southern California.
Ah miss the region dearley & love those beachies, the steepness, and the ultra clear azure water. Some of the clearest around. Cypress stoke: http://driftsurfing.com/features/2010/cypress_chronicles/p1.html
Nice couple of posts. Road tripping to the promised land. Local farmers are the best. Gotta love anyone who works with their hands in the earth and nurtures things to grow.
